Over the past few months, I’ve been reflecting on how much our way of thinking impacts us—whether we’re entrepreneurs, employees, retired, or even in our personal relationships. One recurring theme I’ve noticed is how often we default to focusing on what can go wrong. We’re all familiar with Murphy’s Law—the idea that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong—but how often do we stop to think about other universal laws that might be influencing our lives? Laws that encourage us to focus on positivity, creativity, and abundance.
Recently, a client shared a powerful insight with me: “Words are spells.” It struck me just how true that is. The way we think and the words we use, shape the energy we bring into our lives. So often, we fall into the habit of focusing on lack, speaking about what’s wrong or frustrating, rather than focusing on what’s possible. We vent, we gossip, we criticize—ourselves and others. And before we know it, that negativity starts to take root in our thoughts, influencing our actions and, ultimately, our outcomes.
But what if we were more intentional with our thoughts and words? What if we chose to focus on abundance and the positive possibilities in front of us?
Think about how children approach the world. They are fearless, creative, and unbounded by the limitations that we, as adults, often impose on ourselves. Children believe anything is possible, and because of that, they learn, grow, and create in ways that seem almost magical. What a lesson that is for us—especially in business and life.
The truth is, whether we think we can or we can’t, we’re right. Our thoughts and the actions that stem from them shape our lives. When challenges arise, we have a choice: to dwell in fear and frustration, or to consciously create something meaningful and positive. It’s about shifting our perspective from what’s missing to what’s possible, from scarcity to abundance.
There’s a wealth of literature that supports this concept, from The Law of Attraction to Becoming Superhuman, and The Power of Now. The common thread is clear: the energy we put into the world, the focus of our thoughts, directly influences our reality. When we focus on fear and scarcity, that’s what we invite into our lives. But when we shift our focus to the abundance of opportunities available in the present, we unlock the potential to create something extraordinary.
Here are a few practical ways to harness this mindset of abundance and creativity:
Practice gratitude: Start each day by identifying a few things you’re grateful for, both personally and professionally. This simple exercise shifts your mindset from focusing on what’s missing to recognising what you already have, paving the way for more abundance.
Create without expectation: Set aside time to create without an agenda. Whether it’s writing, drawing, brainstorming, or exploring new ideas, allow yourself to engage in creative play. This freedom can lead to unexpected breakthroughs and innovations.
Challenge limiting thoughts: When fear or doubt creeps in, take a moment to reframe the situation. Ask yourself, “What’s another way to see this?” By shifting your perspective, you can often uncover new possibilities that were hidden by fear.
Build a positive circle: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Positive energy is contagious, and being around like-minded individuals can help reinforce your focus on growth and abundance.
Celebrate progress: Take time to celebrate your wins, both big and small (at times pre-celebration is even recommended). Acknowledging your achievements reinforces a mindset of abundance and keeps you motivated to continue moving forward.
Stay present: The present moment is full of opportunities. When we stay focused on the here and now, rather than worrying about the future, we open ourselves up to the generosity of the present—and to the abundance it holds for the future.
By being mindful of the thoughts we nurture and the words we speak, we position ourselves as conscious creators of our reality. In business, as in life, the focus on abundance—on the wealth of ideas, opportunities, and resources available to us—shifts our mindset from one of fear to one of possibility.
Words, after all, are powerful. They are, indeed, spells that shape the future we are capable of creating. Let’s choose to use them wisely.
